| Entourage: | The Rat Pack
| Who:
| Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop
| | Era: | 1950-60s
| | Famous for: | Entertaining, crooning, boozin', womanizing
| | The "Ari" | | | The "Vince" | | WHO: Sinatra | REASON: It would be tempting to give The Chairman the 'Ari' slot, given that the Hoboken native took s**t from no man. He also had something of a small-but-wiry 'Eric' vibe. But at the end of the day it was Frank that called the shots, and the rest followed. That, and his legendary appetites with the broads give him the Alpha dog Q-rating that screams 'Vince.'
Runner up: Martin, whose dreamy countenance -- and that 'big pizza pie' song -- bring unmistakable charisma. | | | The "Drama" | | WHO: Sammy | | REASON: He had to work a little harder for fame, and knows not to let the good life get away. | | | The "Turtle" | | WHO: Lawford, a no brainer. | | REASON: Martin and Sinatra sing and drink; Sammy sings and dances; Joey's the commedian. What the hell does Lawford do again? Gopher between the Pack and the Kennedys. | | | The "Eric" | | WHO: Bishop | | REASON: Joey's slightly schleppy Everyman routine is probably the closest this crew comes to Eric's pizza-boy-made-good.
| Entourage: | The Brat Pack
| Who:
| Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson
| | Era: | 1980s
| | Famous for: | Hardcore partyin' teen heartthrobs, 80s movies (John Hughes) icons
| | The "Ari" | | WHO: Judd Nelson | | REASON: Tough on the outside, tender on the inside, he can take all the detention you can dish out, but just don't tell him you want your diamond stud earring back. | | | The "Vince" | WHO: Emilio Estevez
| REASON: As the film so brilliantly concludes: "You see us as you want to see us..."
Why do you all insist on stereotyping everyone? Still....
Closing on a dandruffy Ally Sheedy would not seem to put you into Vinnie Chase country, but Estevez's simplistic, almost zen like worldview seems to make him the best candidate. | | | The "Drama" | | WHO: Sheedy | | REASON: Even after Ringwald's Claire gives her a detention makeover there is something slightly unctious about Allison. I'll be alone, dancin, you know it baby. | | | The "Turtle" | | WHO: Hall | | REASON: Although he is arguably the show-stealer and his oeuvre in this period -- which includes the definitive '16 Candles' and 'Weird Science' -- might be second only to Ringwald's Hughes Cycle pictures, there is no question he is not one of the cool kids. His job here is to be the butt of jokes -- and to write the essay for everybody. | | | The "Eric" | | WHO: Molly Ringwald | | REASON: In the end, Claire is the moral center of the film.
| Entourage: | The Golden Girls
| Who:
| Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund, Blanche Devereaux, Sophia Petrillo
| | Era: | 1980s
| | Famous for: | Wisecracking Bickering Engaging in hilarious, feasibility-defying sitcom antics Slaying the hearts of Miami's older, single gentleman scene Eating cheesecake Thanking each other for being each other's friends Being awesome
| | The "Vince" | WHO: Blanche
| REASON: The amount of sex she had alone would make Blanche a no-brainer for “The Vince” of the group, but more than that, Blanche embodies the attitude of Vince better than any of the other girls. She’s charming and confident, but not cocky, and seems to always have a smile on her face without ever seeming aloof. Blanche arguably has a bit more depth and capacity for self-reflection than the more even-tempered Vince (plus, her loyalty was always fighting with her penchant for jealousy, something more attributable to Drama or Turtle), but her talents in the seductive arts rival his in the cinematic arts and, of the four women in the house, she was the only one who actually seemed to truly have fun and enjoy life to its fullest, despite obstacles that came her way. And if that weren’t enough, Blanche and Vince also share the dependency of their closest friends: that house the four ladies share? Blanche owns it.
| | | The "Drama" | WHO: Rose
| REASON: Rose’s naïveté, dim-wittedness, and unflinching loyalty to her friends make her the Golden Girls’ “Johnny Drama” – she doesn’t share Drama’s high maintenance, vanity or trademark crustiness, but she (like he) is her entourage’s reliable source for unintentional comic relief, with scenarios often never turning out for her the way she planned. But perhaps the thing that sums up Rose’s “Drama”-ness the best is her utter cluelessness in imparting anecdotal wisdom to her friends – her yarns from her childhood in the community of St. Olaf, Minnesota are as pointless and irrelevant as Drama’s experiences as a struggling actor in Hollywood (example: she lost the St. Olaf Butter Queen pageant as a teenager due to a “churn tampering incident”; he was originally cast as Joey in the “Friends” pilot, but was replaced by Matt LeBlanc). Yet Rose’s parables, like Drama’s, are always well-intentioned and only serve to make her more endearing to her best friends and us, her biggest fans.
| | | The "Turtle" | WHO: Sophia
| REASON: Sophia is a short, feisty and sarcastic observer of the antics of her friends and housemates, the fruits of whose labor she partially lives off of and for whom her love and loyalty know no bounds – she is the Golden Girls’ “Turtle.” Her acerbic wit and unflinching honesty pose a nice parallel to the barbs Turtle throws the way of the other guys (of particular note is that Sophia seems to love to rip into Rose the same way Turtle does with Drama). She also is a street-smart schemer, always a step ahead of the girls despite her age and seeming diminution in the house (remember, Turtle supplies the guys with all their weed) and is incredibly protective of her daughter Dorothy when it comes to the men she dates (she hates her ex-husband Stan) much in the same way Turtle never wants to see Vince spend more time with a girl than with him (the inherent inconsistency that Blanche, not Dorothy, is “the Vince” in this analogy is recognized, but doesn't lessen the point). But more than any of these examples show, the connection between Sophia and Turtle goes back much further and is much simpler: they’re both Sicilian.
| | | The "Eric" | WHO: Dorothy
| REASON: At first, seeing Dorothy as the Golden Girls’ “Eric” may not seem to make sense, what with her being arguably the central member of her household, to say nothing of her height. But a more careful look will find essential similarities: Dorothy is the brains of the house and the catalyst for anything meaningful getting done (much as Eric, Vince’s manager and confidant, drives all important decisions with the guys); she is the first one to think about the practical implications of any situation; she is easily the most serious of the four, yet possesses the sharpness to spar with any of her housemates should they cross her or challenge her or should their stupidity demand it (it’s worth noting, though, that Dorothy has a warmth and sense of humor to her that are rarely to be found within Eric). And, perhaps most importantly of all, Dorothy’s poor luck in the romance department (and her dramatic over-thinking of it) is something she could only share with poor E, who always seems to be crying over some girl, be it Kristen, Sloan or Anna Farris. But just like in a fairy tale, the Golden Girls ended when Dorothy rode off into the sunset with Blanche’s uncle Lucas Hollingsworth – will the same fate await E?
